100 Bullets in Pictures

The last dog is hung, the last glass is dry, and after 24 hours of recovery, the Hero Initiative/Meltdown Comics 100 Bullets farewell party is in the books. We'll figure out just how much the piano tuner charged us to tune a piano, but thanks to a DAMN vigorous auction, the night was both fun and profitable for Hero.

Take a look-see folks. All photos were taken by and are courtesy of Lori Matsumoto, who's available for all your photography needs! Up top: The Rev. Dave Johnson, Jim McLauchlin, Brian Azzarello.A major portion of the evening's festivities was a q-and-a with Azzarello and Johnson, hosted by Jeffrey Berman (above) of TheWriteEnvironment.com.
Music was provided by the amazing Nina Storey and Ryan Franks! L-R, that's Nina, manager Bill Bennett, ASCAP's Josh Briggs, Ryan, and a doofus with a drink.Several comic book-y luminaries showed up, such as Jim Lee (above).Paris Kennedy (l) and Sam Humphries (r) ran an auction which grossed $4900 on only seven items! The great Dave Johnson "Megan" piece above sold to BOOM Studios' Ross Richie for $1100.

Of course, none o' this happens without the efforts of MANY fine folks. L-R above: Hero Development Director Christina Zietsman, Sam's Afro, half-drunk doofus, and Hero volunteer Diana Knight.

More photos are at a Flickr page, and will continue to be updated, so keep checkin'.

Seriously, if you weren't there…what the hell is your problem?

NEW Hero T-shirt debuts at 100 Bullets party!

And lo, there shall come…a new T-shirt design!

Folks smart enough to buy a VIP ticket to the 100 Bullets: Last Shot party July 11 at Meltdown in L.A. will get, as part of their VIP package, a T-shirt. And it's your choice. The 100B shirt seen above, or the NEW Hero T-shirt, uh, also above.

Crazy visual hyperkinetic you-gotta-be-there bonus: The Hero shirts will be pre-made and ready for you to pick up. The 100B. shirts will be live screened ON SITE . Tell ’em what size you need, and the crew from Blue Rooster Art Supplies will make it RIGHT before your eyes. It's kinda like going to the taco truck and ordering lunch. I like mine with lots of cheese, and just a smidge of guacamole.

VIP tix holders also get super-cool 100 Bullets shot glasses, and one hair plucked from the beard of Brian Azzarello. He's got a lot to spare.

And if you're so lame you don't make the scene, the new Hero shirts will also be available at The Beast Men Call San Diego.

HeroesCon 2009

HEROESCON 2009

Well another HeroesCon has come and gone and yes it is sad but on an up note we did have a great time for all and a special thanks to Shelton and Dustin for always being there for us and supporting the Hero Initiative. I really enjoy this show because of what it is all about which are the fans and keeping it real and all about the comics and the creators. This is one of the most family friendly shows you will ever attend.

Of course we had the spectacular George Perez at the booth all weekend signing and drawing sketches as you can see in the pictures below.

I still think this guy is some kind of robot because he keeps going like the energizer bunny.

Of course George is always doing his on raffle drawings as seen below. It is a couple of minutes long but everyone as you can tell had a great time. Robot I'm telling you Robot!

Now on to some other special people that also made this happen Steve Epting, Chris Moreno, Roy Thomas, Dick Giordano, Matt Fraction, Mark Waid and a brand new friend to the cause Chris Samnee. You can drop by and meet Chris at WW Chicago in August and he does some spectacular art.

I am always supported by some really great volunteers at the booth in Charlotte and these guys are always working above and beyond what they have to and I really appreciate this a lot. Below you will see a picture of the booth with everyone involved and plus a few friends. Special thanks to Lynette, Tony, Gary, Dave and Mike for doing a great job and if I forgot anyone please forgive and just remember I am old and the mind is just not what it used to be.

So again another successful show and my thanks to everyone involved and I look forward to doing it again.

Below is a short video of the convention floor area from the area above as you go in.

And of course, our pals at Marvel Comics are graciously allowing this piece's inclusion in the book.

Did we mention Hero Comics, debuting at San Diego, 32 all-new, no-ads pages? We just did? Okay, then.

Unfinished symphony, Dave Simons

Very unfortunately, artist Dave Simons passed away last week. Dave was in progress on a page in Hero Comics at the time. He had sent in the script, but had not started drawing the page yet.

Dave's script will still appear, as part of what will now be a tribute page in the book. Hero's Charlie Novinskie, a friend of Dave's, will write a remembrance on that page as well.

We present Dave's script here as well, as a bit of an "unfinished symphony." Both this blog post and the page in the book happen only on the advice and consent of Bette Simons, Dave's sister and next-of-kin. As you read it, we ask you keep both of them in your thoughts.

A nice pic of younger Dave at the bottom as well.

(Dave Simons)
DEAL WITH THE DEVIL

PANEL 1
We see a dramatic shot of THE DEVIL. My version looks more like a hot-rod devil, the kind of thing Robert Williams would draw.

CAPTION 1
That's usually who it is in those jokes. It's the kind of tale told over the second or third cocktail, the joke about what you want and what you get in your deal with the devil.

PANEL 2
INT. BAR, angle on DAVE, age 18 and wearing U.S. Coast Guard dress uniform of the period, with a drink and a cigarette, looking smug.
CAPTION 2
In these tales, the
letter of the contract is always granted, but never the intent.

PANEL 3
NIGHT, EXT. CITY STREET, on DAVE, now in his early 50s, sitting on a stoop and looking at the cigarette in his hand, dejectedly.
CAPTION 3
Thirty-five years later, and I still did not have lung cancer or gum cancer. What I did have was esophageal cancer (look it up).
CAPTION 4
Thanks to serving my country in my youth, my medical expenses are well-covered. What's not are my living expenses. I'm in the odd position of being able to work, but not being able to work enough to pay my bills.
CAPTION 5
Hero Initiative has been invaluable here. When the wolf is at the door, Hero Initiative has been there to pay the rent. Many times. That wolf, he does get hungry.

PANEL 4
INT. STUDIO, on DAVE hunched over a drafting table and feverishly drawing away in a cramped studio space.
CAPTION 6
For now, I do what I can. Some days are better than others. It's tough to find the time and energy, whenever I can, I draw,
CAPTION 7
I know now I made a deal with the devil. I just didn't know I'd be rescued by angels.

Hero Memberships: Out with the 2009, in with the 2010!

Okay, call me hokey, but I’m a big believer in providing value for a dollar. Even if, as is the case with Hero Initiative, we’re a charity.

Now don’t get me wrong—we love what is known in the business as the “unsolicited donation,” that $50 check that shows up in the mail or the $10 outta nowhere that someone drops in the donation jar at a convention. We’ll take that all the live-long day, gladly. And we appreciate the hell outta it.

But we’re also not blind to the put-it-in-quotes “economy being what it is today.” Folks just don’t have the disposable income they had a year or two or three ago. And as we like to provide value for the dollar, we believe you should get full value out of a yearly Hero Initiative membership. So that said…

We are closing 2009 Hero memberships effective June 30, 2009. Bottom line, we’d just kinda feel badly taking your money for a yearly membership when you’re only there half a year. Now by NO means does this mean the membership program is going away! Quite to the contrary we’re already formulating 2010’s membership plan, which should be quite a humdinger. And if you are interested, we do encourage you to sign up NOW and before June 30, as…

• All 2009 members will get a discount on renewing their 2010 memberships!
• If you sign up on-site at Wizard Philly and Charlotte Heroescon, both June 19-21, there will be special incentive for you to sign up!
• 2010 will feature different premiums, and additional special members-only events at conventions and so on.

So there you be, folks. The clock is ticking. Don’t let it run out on ya!

S. Clay Wilson: Gettin' Better

We’re happy to report that legendary underground comix creator S. Clay Wilson is gettin’ better. Lorraine Chamberlain, S. Clay’s girlfriend and legal conservator, dropped some photos on us. Up top, left-to-right, that’s Paul Mavrides, Wilson, R. Crumb, and Spain Rodriguez. Spain has also been instrumental in helping out Clay and Lorraine.

Sayeth the Chamberlain: “I thought you'd like to see a couple of pix I took last week when Crumb, Spain and Mavrides visited him in the hospital. We had a lovely visit, and took him out nearby for coffee after having a picnic lunch Spain brought to the ward.
“I'm hoping he will be stabilized in the next few weeks. I hope to get him home by his birthday in July.”

Hero is fortunate enough to have slid some legal, financial, and technical help the way of Lorraine and Clay. And we think it would be a damn good idea of YOU continue to fund the S. Clay Wilson Special Needs Trust at: http://sclaywilsontrust.com/

And left-right, below, there’s Spain, Wilson, Lorraine, Crumb.

2009 Free Comic Book Day recap!

Well, it’s in the books, and a splendid time was had by all!

Our pals at Collector’s Paradise in Winnetka, CA had a bountiful bevy of great creators (including Mark Waid and Marc Guggenheim, above, in a David Dearmore photo), and their beat goes on, as Hero-benefit auctions are still running via eBay.

Up Sacramento way, ace Hero vol Jason Waters beat the Hero drum to raise some bucks, and A-1 Comics of Sacramento even matched funds!

South Bay Hero vol Susan Weyl took care o’ business at the Comic Bug in Manhattan Beach, where there was face-painting (below) and all kinds of gimcracky!
Meltdown Comics on the Sunset Strip played host to Tim Sale, who raised many hundreds of bucks for Hero with great drawings.

4-Color Fantasies in Rancho Cucamonga kicked out the jams with raffles, rides, and all kinds of events.

On Los Angeles’ all-charity Big Sunday, Countdown and Robin writer Adam Beechen even got into the spirit of things with “Heroic” photos, this one with girlfriend Mindy.

Thanks to all, kids!

Introducing Hero Initiative Video

"Introducing Hero Initiative" is the mini-est of super-mini "documentaries" about The Hero Initiative. Very soon, we'll have 5- and 10-minute video versions of what Hero is all about that will be played at conventions, at comic stores, and more. To kick things off, consider this our 1-minute "trailer." There will be more testimonials from folks Hero has helped, more info from comic creators and retailers, and all sorts of stuff. You can view the initial 1-minute trailer on Hero's website, or YouTube.

Hero board member Brian Pulido, who has a killer film background, worked his ass off on putting this together. I don't know the names of all the magic elves who helped them, so we'll leave it to Bri to mention them so they can take a bow. Ace Hero vol Tony Tower, who's part of the stellar production crew at ABC's Good Morning America, laid in with his own magic elves on the Gene Colan bit. We thank them ALL.

If you'd like to run this video in your comic store or similar venue, please contact Hero's Christina Zietsman at peppera66@yahoo.com

George Perez talks, we listen

We at The Hero Initiative are fortunate enough to have the mighty George Pérez at our booth at the New York Comic Con, Orlando MegaCon, Wizard World Chicago con and liklely a few other spots this year. George has already released the following via his Website, but also wants to make note here. In addition to Hero Initiative, George has done signings for the American Diabetes Association and other worthy causes, so no matter what, your money's always going to a good place. And for that, we thank George!

Jim McLauchlin

Hello:
Now that I'm back doing conventions again, albeit not as many as I used to, I have been receiving a lot of e-mails regarding commissioned sketches and I need to clarify a few things.

For the last couple of years I've had to institute a "lottery" style system at conventions to manage the large number of fans who want to get a sketch. What's usually done is that, during the first hour of the convention day, I, or an assistant, gives out a ticket stub to anyone who desires a sketch. The other half of the ticket is put into a bowl. After an hour all the tickets are stirred up in the bowl and a small number (usually about 10) are drawn from that bowl. The 10 winners then pay the price for the sketch (which is now $100) and I get those sketches done during the course of the convention day. Please note that all money earned during my convention time goes to charity (usually the Hero Initiative, but this applies to any charity I'm raising money for).

This method seems to have gone over very well in the past couple of years and it gives every fan an even chance, whether he or she is a dealer already on the convention floor before the doors open or a fan waiting on line either at the start of the line or the end (the first hour of the show should be enough time to allow everyone on an average convention line to get into the hall)

Now, due to the extremely hectic nature of a convention and the flattering number of fans who line up for sketches and/or autographs I did have to set up some rules and limitations, which, once explained, I hope you all understand and accept.

1. The first ticket handed out to a customer is free.
However, due to fan requests and past experiences, you can increase your chances at winning a sketch by donating a dollar for each extra ticket you want. The winner would still have to pay the price of the sketch once he or she wins. This was actually a fan's idea, and proved to be both popular and profitable. One fan paid over $70 dollars in tickets, knowing he would then have to pay the price of the sketch as well when he won. Ironically, he didn't win and one other fan actually won with the free ticket he had, not having purchased any extra chances. In a touching gesture, and in the true spirit of charity, the winner with the free ticket gave his ticket to the guy who had paid so much money. Now, that's a side of fandom I love to see, and it's one of the wonderful side benefits of the system I've adopted.

2. Only one win per customer per day.
Again, this was done in the name of fairness to everyone, but also brought about a spontaneous act of charity and camaraderie among the fans when the winners started distributing the rest of their tickets to the other waiting fans, thus increasing the chances of winning for those whose numbers had not yet been drawn. The best side of fandom yet again, and it makes for a nice block party atmosphere. This whole process is repeated every day, so a person can conceivably win more than one sketch if he or she has a winning number on separate days. New tickets are used each day, so preceding days' tickets are void after the day of drawing.

3. You have to be there to win.
Pretty obvious, really, since the tickets only have numbers and no names. However, if you need to leave early and it doesn't look like I will get to your sketch before your departure, shipping arrangements can be made for a nominal fee, unless you or a proxy can pick it up the following day. You don't have to be there while your sketch is being drawn since we will write down your name and the character you want drawn. Just check in from time to time to see where you are on the queue.

4. I can only draw portrait drawings (head shots with chest symbol,
if any), no full figures.
This is an unavoidable limitation due to the number of autographs I need to sign and panels that I am sometimes required to attend during the course of a convention. Also, please, only fictional characters, no portraits of real people. That's more work than I can do under convention conditions

5. I alternate sketching and autographing times.
In order to get sketches done without interruption, I close my table to autographs for an hour or so in order to get some sketches done. Then I open up for about a half hour for autographs and then go back to sketches for another hour and so on. Times will be posted at the table as the day commences and will be determined by the number of fans there and the number of books to be signed. However, even if I am sketching, please feel free to say hello and chat. I can still do both simultaneously.

6. Regarding autographs, I do not charge for autographs but do request donations for charity, especially if I'm being asked to sign a large number of books.
The size of the donation is not monitored by me, but, being the charity shill that I am, I don't really like to hear the sound of coins landing in the jar. Paper money is so much more calming to my nerves-- and helps needy people even more.

7. For those wanting full-figure sketches, all is not lost. I am now doing such sketches through The Artist's Choice (www.theartistschoice.com) and you should be provided with rates and specifics there. The rates are pretty high, but, so far, most buyers feel that they've gotten bang for their buck and my goal is to keep my loyal fanbase happy.

Well, if you've read all this, I commend you for your patience and I thank you for your understanding. Hopefully. I will be able to provide you with a sketch that will meet your heart's desire, either at a con or through the mail. In any case, I appreciate the attention and the consideration and shall always strive to be worthy of it all.

Take care,
GPz
